The Food and Drug Administration will allow Viagra (sildenafil) to be sold as a treatment for erectile dysfunction by the Food and Drug Administration over the next few months, Health Canada said today.
The Canadian Competition and Consumer Commission will consider the decision after it received final approval from the FDA for the drug, which is sold under the brand name Viagra.
In a statement, the agency said, "The Canadian Competition and Consumer Commission is committed to supporting patients who are navigating the complex world of erectile dysfunction medications and ensuring that their health is best served by safe, effective, affordable treatments."
The agency said that the drug is "a major step forward in the fight against ED and is supported by scientific evidence and the regulatory framework," but that the FDA is "reviewing the drug more strictly and will take swift action."
The agency's decision will apply to Canadian pharmacies and will be made public later this week, the agency said.
"Viagra is a medication for male sexual dysfunction and it has been approved by the FDA in both Canada and the United States for use in erectile dysfunction treatments," it said. "Viagra is a generic and is available in more than 100 countries."
"This decision will be the first step in the fight against counterfeit Viagra," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
"For many men, taking a pill to achieve and maintain a firm erection could be a daunting task and can have serious health consequences," she said.
The FDA's decision is in contrast to an earlier one in 2012 when a study published in the journal found that men with ED had a "significantly higher incidence of ED," it said. The findings of the study were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's annual meeting.
"It has been reported that men with erectile dysfunction may experience an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, which could lead to death," said Dr. David Woodcock, the FDA's medical director.
"For these men, the treatment of ED is important, especially if they are taking medications that may interact with these medications," Woodcock said. "These interactions can lead to adverse effects and could affect the quality of the erectile function, potentially increasing the risk of ED."
In Canada, the drug was approved in the U. S. in June 2014, when Health Canada issued a warning that the drug was associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. It also was associated with an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
"We will continue to work with the FDA to determine if these risks are serious enough to warrant a reevaluation of the drug's safety profile," said Health Canada's chief medical officer, Dr. Michael Osterloh. "The approval of Viagra will be a major step forward in addressing ED, and we remain committed to the safety of this drug."
